Soile Yli-Mäyry, who was born in Kuortane and holds a doctorate in political science, has been an artist for 30 years. Soile Yli-Mäyry has quickly leapt into international recognition with her distinctive oil paintings. She has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions since completing her studies in art at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (1972-75). In recent years she has had more and more invited exhibitions abroad, for instance in the USA, Japan and various parts of Europe, totalling 300 exhibitions. In her work, Yli-Mäyry uses a palette knife and paint in three different ways: a thin layer, thick slashes and scratches on painted surfaces, such that the work gets a three-dimensional feel. The main theme of Yli-Mäyry’s paintings is humanity and people’s estrangement from nature in the urban world.
The art hall is located in Kuortane, in the village of Mäyry, and is open daily during the summer season from 12:00-17:00. A docent is on site. There is also an old stable in the yard which has been converted into a café, which is open during the art hall’s open hours.
The Soile Yli-Mäyry Art Hall is located in Kuortane, about 36 km from Seinäjoki. You can get there in your own car.
