Seinäjoki City Orchestra was founded in 1936 as an association. Its permanent roster includes a string quartet and a wind quartet, and the orchestra’s main focus is on chamber music. The orchestra also regularly performs symphonies with additional musicians.
Seinäjoki City Orchestra performs with the opera productions of the Seinäjoki City Theatre and Opera Association and at the Ilmajoki Music Festival. It is also a regular participant in the Korsholm Music Festival and performs at the annual Tangomarkkinat tango festival in Seinäjoki. The orchestra performs church music with local choirs. It frequently collaborates with the Vaasa City Orchestra, giving two or three joint concerts each year.
The orchestra is based at the purpose-built Seinäjoki Auditorium, which was completed in 1992 and has a capacity of 410. The orchestra’s chamber music ensembles have toured extensively in Finland as well as in Russia, Italy, Germany, Spain, Argentina and Vietnam.
