Finnish Emigrant Museum/the Hakala House

The Finnish Emigrant Museum or Maailman Raitti is located in Peräseinäjoki. All of the buildings were originally built and lived in by Finnish emigrants in various parts of the world and have since been relocated to the site by the Kalajärvi lake. The buildings, objects and photos tell vivid stories of the lives of Finnish emigrants. The first building, the Hakala House in America, was opened to the public in 2008.

The house tells the story of Matti and Sanna Hakala and their descendants. Ilmajoki-born Matti Hakala worked on the railways in the USA in the early 1900s and managed to save enough money to build a house there. The building contains objects and photos which depict various events in the lives of the Hakala family and take the visitor on an authentic journey to see how the emigrants lived over a century ago. The other buildings on the site are also well worth a visit. Maailman Raitti is managed by the Suomen Siirtolaisuusmuseon Tuki ry support association.
